The Bard Lugo Land Residency

The Bard Lugo Land Prize is an award given to a graduating senior in the Photography program, to spend the month of July in the small northern Italian city of Lugo producing a new body of work the summer after graduation. This city, in the Region of Emilia-Romagna, is not the site for a traditional picturesque Italian experience, but more like photographing in the Hudson Valley, and is such an extension of the Bard student’s education. This region has a great photographic tradition, from Luigi Ghirri to Guido Guidi and Olivo Barbieri, with a longstanding dialog with American photography.

The Lugo Land project attempts to document and investigate the changing face of the italian province, through the critical gaze of contemporary photographers. Since 2004 the project has involved international artists such as Graciela Iturbide, Guido Guidi, Olivo Barbieri, Tim Davis, Xavier Ribas, David Farrell, Terry Adkins, alongside younger photographers. Each artist contributes in creating a photographic archive of the city through experimentation and the development of a particular visual language.

The prizewinner is flown to Italy, housed in a hotel in the city center, and fed breakfast and dinner. He/She will be guided in the making of his/her project by Luca Nostri and Francesco Neri (photographers and curators of the The Lugo Land Residency Program). The goal is to make a new body of work in and around Lugo, resulting in a small-edition artist book or portfolio, produced by Lugo Land. Studio visits with local artists and trips to important local sites will be arranged, and a public lecture may be required.

Application is by portfolio only.
